Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Hindi / common name: Macular Degeneration (badhti umar mein retina ke beech (macula) ki kharabi)

By ORINvue, Lucknow · Updated 2026-10-14 · Information only, not medical advice

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that damages the macula, the small central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision used for reading, recognising faces and driving. It usually affects people over 50. AMD does not cause total blindness, because side vision remains, but it can make central vision blurred or distorted. There are two main types: dry AMD, which progresses slowly, and wet AMD, which can damage vision quickly.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Causes and risk factors

How it is diagnosed

An ophthalmologist examines the macula after dilating the pupils and usually performs an OCT scan to look at the retinal layers. A dye test (angiography) may be used if wet AMD is suspected. An Amsler grid is a simple chart that helps people notice distortion at home between visits.

Treatment options

Glasses and lens options

Updated glasses cannot cure AMD, but correct power, high-quality magnifying reading lenses and good lighting help people make the most of their remaining vision. Sunglasses with UV protection are sensible outdoors.

Prevention and everyday care

When to see an eye specialist the same day

  • Sudden distortion of straight lines
  • A new dark spot in central vision
  • Rapid decrease in reading vision
  • Any sudden change in vision in one eye

Macular Degeneration in Lucknow

As families in Lucknow live longer, more elders notice reading difficulties. Not all of it is just 'needing a new chashma', so unexplained central blur deserves a doctor's check.

Frequently asked questions about Macular Degeneration

Does macular degeneration cause total blindness?

No. AMD affects central vision, but side vision usually remains. Many people continue to live independently with low-vision support.

What is the difference between dry and wet AMD?

Dry AMD is more common and progresses slowly. Wet AMD involves abnormal leaking blood vessels and can damage vision quickly, so it needs prompt treatment.

Can supplements prevent AMD?

Specific supplements may slow progression in people who already have intermediate or advanced AMD. They are not proven to prevent it in healthy eyes. Ask your eye doctor before starting.

What is an Amsler grid?

A square grid of lines with a centre dot. Looking at it with each eye regularly can help you notice new distortion early. Report any change to your eye doctor.

Can glasses fix AMD?

No. Glasses and magnifiers can help you use remaining vision better, but they do not treat the disease.
