Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye / Aankh Aana)

Hindi / common name: Conjunctivitis (aankh aana / aankh lal hona)

By ORINvue, Lucknow · Updated 2026-10-14 · Information only, not medical advice

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear layer that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. In India it is widely known as 'aankh aana' or 'eye flu'. It makes the eye red, watery and gritty. Most cases are viral and get better on their own in one to two weeks, but some types need treatment, and a red eye is not always conjunctivitis.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis

Causes and risk factors

How it is diagnosed

An eye doctor can usually diagnose conjunctivitis by asking about your symptoms and examining the eye with a slit lamp. The doctor checks that the cornea and inner eye are healthy, because conditions like keratitis, uveitis and acute glaucoma can also cause a red eye but need very different treatment.

Frequently asked questions about Conjunctivitis

How long does aankh aana last?

Viral conjunctivitis usually gets better in one to two weeks. Bacterial conjunctivitis improves within a few days of correct treatment. If it lasts longer, see an eye doctor.

Does looking at someone with pink eye spread it?

No. It spreads through contact with eye discharge, usually via hands, towels or shared items, not by looking at someone.

Can I use any eye drops from the chemist?

Lubricating drops are generally safe, but avoid self-medicating with antibiotic or steroid drops. Steroid drops in particular can cause serious problems without supervision.

Should children stay home from school?

Many schools ask children to stay home while the eyes are red and discharging. Follow your doctor's and school's advice.

Can I wear my glasses during conjunctivitis?

Yes. Clean them daily with soap and water. Do not wear contact lenses until the infection has fully cleared.
