Retinal Detachment
Hindi / common name: Retinal Detachment (retina (parda) ka khisakna / alag hona)
Retinal detachment is a serious condition, needing same-day treatment, in which the retina, the thin light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, pulls away from its normal position. Without prompt treatment it can cause permanent vision loss in that eye. Most detachments begin with a small tear in the retina, often signalled by sudden floaters and flashes. Quick action gives the best chance of saving vision.

Symptoms of Retinal Detachment
- A sudden increase in floaters, specks or cobwebs
- Flashes of light in one or both eyes
- A dark shadow or curtain moving across part of your vision
- Blurred vision
- Usually painless, which is why people sometimes delay
Causes and risk factors
- High myopia (short-sightedness)
- Previous cataract or other eye surgery
- Posterior vitreous detachment with age
- Eye injury
- Previous retinal detachment in the other eye, or a family history
- Advanced diabetic retinopathy (tractional detachment)
How it is diagnosed
An ophthalmologist examines the retina after dilating the pupils, often with special lenses and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Ultrasound may be used if bleeding blocks the view, and OCT can show whether the central retina (macula) is involved.
Treatment options
- Retinal tears without detachment: laser or freezing (cryotherapy) treatment to seal the tear
- Pneumatic retinopexy: a gas bubble injected into the eye with laser or freezing, in selected cases
- Scleral buckle surgery
- Vitrectomy surgery, removing the vitreous gel and using gas or silicone oil to hold the retina in place
- Surgery is usually needed urgently, often within hours to days, depending on the type
Glasses and lens options
Glasses do not treat retinal detachment. After surgery, vision and spectacle power can change, and your surgeon will tell you when it is suitable to update your glasses.
Prevention and everyday care
- Know the warning signs and act immediately
- People with high myopia should have regular dilated retina checks
- Wear protective eyewear during sports and risky work
- Control diabetes and attend retina screenings
- Attend all follow-up visits after eye surgery
When to see an eye specialist the same day
- Sudden new floaters
- New flashes of light
- A shadow or curtain over any part of vision
- Sudden blurred or lost vision. Any of these: go to an eye hospital immediately, the same day

Book Free Eye TestFrequently asked questions about Retinal Detachment
Is retinal detachment painful?
Usually not. The lack of pain is why people sometimes delay treatment. Flashes, floaters and a shadow are the warning signs.
Can vision be restored after retinal detachment?
Many people regain useful vision, especially if treated before the central retina (macula) detaches. Delay reduces the chances.
Who is at higher risk?
People with high myopia, previous eye surgery or injury, a family history, or a previous detachment in the other eye.
Can glasses or exercises prevent detachment?
No. Regular check-ups for high-risk people and acting quickly on warning signs are what matter.
How soon should I see a doctor with sudden flashes?
The same day. A retinal tear treated early can often prevent a detachment.
