Eye Floaters and Flashes

Hindi / common name: Eye Floaters (aankhon ke aage machhar, dhaage ya dhabbe udna)

By ORINvue, Lucknow · Updated 2026-10-14 · Information only, not medical advice

Floaters are small specks, dots, threads or cobweb-like shapes that drift across your vision, especially when looking at a bright sky or white wall. Most floaters are harmless and come from natural changes in the gel (vitreous) that fills the eye. However, a sudden increase in floaters, especially with flashes of light or a shadow, can be a warning sign of a retinal tear or detachment and needs urgent examination.

Symptoms of Eye Floaters

Causes and risk factors

How it is diagnosed

An ophthalmologist examines the retina carefully after dilating the pupils to check for any tear, detachment, bleeding or inflammation. Ultrasound or OCT may be used. Anyone with sudden new floaters or flashes should have this examination as soon as possible, ideally the same day.

Treatment options

Glasses and lens options

Glasses do not remove floaters. Correct power, anti-glare lenses and sunglasses in bright light can make floaters less bothersome.

Prevention and everyday care

When to see an eye specialist the same day

  • A sudden shower of new floaters
  • Flashes of light, especially new ones
  • A dark curtain or shadow over part of your vision
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Floaters after an eye injury

Frequently asked questions about Eye Floaters

Are eye floaters dangerous?

Most long-standing floaters are harmless. Sudden new floaters, especially with flashes or a shadow, can mean a retinal tear and need urgent examination.

Will floaters go away?

They usually do not disappear completely, but most become much less noticeable as the brain learns to ignore them.

Why do I see floaters more on bright days?

Bright backgrounds like the sky make the shadows of floaters on the retina easier to see.

Can eye drops remove floaters?

No eye drops are proven to dissolve floaters.

Are floaters more common with myopia?

Yes. People with myopia, especially high myopia, tend to develop floaters earlier and have a higher risk of retinal tears.
