Retinal Detachment

Hindi / common name: Retinal Detachment (retina (parda) ka khisakna / alag hona)

By ORINvue, Lucknow · Updated 2026-10-14 · Information only, not medical advice

Retinal detachment is a serious condition, needing same-day treatment, in which the retina, the thin light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, pulls away from its normal position. Without prompt treatment it can cause permanent vision loss in that eye. Most detachments begin with a small tear in the retina, often signalled by sudden floaters and flashes. Quick action gives the best chance of saving vision.

Symptoms of Retinal Detachment

Causes and risk factors

How it is diagnosed

An ophthalmologist examines the retina after dilating the pupils, often with special lenses and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Ultrasound may be used if bleeding blocks the view, and OCT can show whether the central retina (macula) is involved.

Treatment options

Glasses and lens options

Glasses do not treat retinal detachment. After surgery, vision and spectacle power can change, and your surgeon will tell you when it is suitable to update your glasses.

Prevention and everyday care

When to see an eye specialist the same day

  • Sudden new floaters
  • New flashes of light
  • A shadow or curtain over any part of vision
  • Sudden blurred or lost vision. Any of these: go to an eye hospital immediately, the same day

Frequently asked questions about Retinal Detachment

Is retinal detachment painful?

Usually not. The lack of pain is why people sometimes delay treatment. Flashes, floaters and a shadow are the warning signs.

Can vision be restored after retinal detachment?

Many people regain useful vision, especially if treated before the central retina (macula) detaches. Delay reduces the chances.

Who is at higher risk?

People with high myopia, previous eye surgery or injury, a family history, or a previous detachment in the other eye.

Can glasses or exercises prevent detachment?

No. Regular check-ups for high-risk people and acting quickly on warning signs are what matter.

How soon should I see a doctor with sudden flashes?

The same day. A retinal tear treated early can often prevent a detachment.
