Eye Allergy (Allergic Conjunctivitis)
Hindi / common name: Eye Allergy (aankhon mein allergy / khujli aur paani aana)
Eye allergy, or allergic conjunctivitis, happens when the eye's surface reacts to things like pollen, dust, mould or pet dander. The hallmark is itching: eyes become itchy, red and watery, often in both eyes together, sometimes with sneezing and a runny nose. Eye allergy is not contagious. In children, especially boys in hot climates, a stronger form called vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC, spring catarrh) can occur and needs an eye doctor's care.

Symptoms of Eye Allergy
- Intense itching, the most typical symptom
- Redness of both eyes
- Watery eyes or stringy white discharge
- Swollen, puffy eyelids
- Burning or gritty feeling
- Sneezing, runny nose or itchy throat at the same time
- In VKC: severe itching, light sensitivity and thick ropy discharge in children
Causes and risk factors
- Seasonal pollen from trees, grasses and crops
- House dust mites, mould and cockroach allergens
- Pet dander
- Smoke, pollution and strong perfumes
- Hot, dry and dusty weather, which is linked to VKC in children
- A personal or family history of asthma, eczema or hay fever
How it is diagnosed
An eye doctor diagnoses eye allergy from the symptoms and an examination of the eyelids and conjunctiva with a slit lamp. In VKC, the doctor looks for large bumps (papillae) under the upper eyelid and checks the cornea. Allergy testing by a physician can sometimes identify triggers.
Treatment options
- Cold compresses and chilled lubricating drops to soothe itching and rinse allergens
- Anti-allergy eye drops (antihistamine or mast-cell stabiliser), as advised by an eye doctor or pharmacist
- Oral antihistamines for associated nose symptoms, as advised by a doctor
- Steroid eye drops only for short courses under an eye doctor, because unsupervised use can cause glaucoma and cataract
- Children with VKC need regular follow-up with an ophthalmologist
Glasses and lens options
Glasses or sunglasses act as a partial barrier against pollen and dust outdoors. Contact lens wearers may need to switch to glasses during allergy flares, or use daily disposable lenses as advised.
Prevention and everyday care
- Avoid rubbing your eyes, as rubbing worsens itching and is linked to keratoconus
- Keep windows closed on high-pollen or dusty days
- Wash face and hands after coming indoors
- Wash bedding regularly in hot water to reduce dust mites
- Keep pets out of the bedroom if you are allergic to them
When to see an eye specialist the same day
- Eye pain or blurred vision that does not clear
- Strong light sensitivity
- Symptoms in one eye only with discharge, which may be infection
- Severe swelling with difficulty breathing, which needs urgent medical care
Eye Allergy in Lucknow
Lucknow sees pollen in spring, dust during the hot dry months and smog in winter, so many residents have seasonal itchy eyes. Children with severe summer itching should be seen by an eye doctor for VKC.

Book Free Eye TestFrequently asked questions about Eye Allergy
Is eye allergy contagious?
No. Allergic conjunctivitis is a reaction, not an infection, so it cannot spread to other people.
How do I know if it is allergy or infection?
Allergy usually causes itching in both eyes with watery discharge. Infection is more likely with sticky yellow discharge, often starting in one eye. An eye doctor can tell for sure.
Can I use steroid eye drops for itching?
Only if an eye doctor prescribes them and monitors you. Unsupervised steroid drops can cause glaucoma and cataract.
Why are my child's eyes itchy every summer?
It may be vernal keratoconjunctivitis, a seasonal allergy common in children in hot climates. It needs an ophthalmologist's care.
Do sunglasses help with eye allergy?
They act as a partial barrier against pollen and dust and reduce light sensitivity outdoors.
